Dropbox and FilesAnywhere

Critical Nano applications!  Free!

If you’re using multiple computers for Nanowrimo, you’ll want to sign up for a free dropbox account. Dropbox is a system that will sync your files on different computers.  Which also means if one computer dies, the other will be able to open the file.  Even if you plan to use a flashdrive, get dropbox because it’s impossible to leave dropbox in your jeans when you do the laundry.

FilesAnywhere offers free backup and storage of your files.  If you don’t need to sync between computers, you can upload your work to filesanywhere and always have a recent copy.  The downside is that you do have to remember to upload the file.

I have both.  FilesAnywhere for longer term storage of manuscripts after they’ve gone to the publisher because I never know when I’ll need them back.  And dropbox for working copies so I can switch between the netbook and the big laptop.

  1. I use Google Docs. It can be edited in-browser and accessed from any computer. Skydrive.live.com is also a good place for free storage.

  2. I like google docs because free is always good. But since I work in software specifically designed for noveling, I need a way to sync those files between computers. Dropbox is good for that since it doesn’t have to recognize a specific file type.

  3. Why do you use Files Anywhere for long term storage? Why not just use Dropbox for that? I don’t really get the advantage of Files Anywhere

    • Dropbox has to be installed on a computer before it can be accessed. Files Anywhere can be accessed by any computer I’m on without installing new software. So I use dropbox for material I’m actively working on and tuck older stuff away on files anywhere for an archive. That way I don’t clutter my dropbox account with old editing files for a novel that was released five years ago.
